Superman #2 review
Quick Review
- The art is looking good, I actually think that it gets better as the series goes on, whoever is doing it (I can’t really tell if it’s George Perez or Jesus Merino tbh) is really getting the hang of drawing Supes in his new outfit and despite the markedly 80s style it’s still works well.
- I’m really glad Perez is leaving the series after issue #5, his first issue was excellent and his verbosity really set the stage for a grand Superman story revolving around the new Daily Planet news station and a strong silent Superman. However his writing has now careened into full blown corniness, lacking in subtly not only in conversations and dialogue but in the overarching plot as well. Perez writes like he’s doing a bad Scott Snyder impersonation.
- Superman deserves better characterization than this, if he’s not moping he’s thinking about moping and if he’s not thinking about moping someone else is telling him things like “oh you’re so mopey latey” or “you’re a bigger threat to Metropolis and the world than you know”. How can a new Superman series already seem so old? How can this be the same Superman who was punching through buildings to grab crooked officials and putting Batman in choke holds?
The Verdict
I can’t wait for Perez to step away from this series and hand it over to someone else. George is probably a good guy but I think he’s a little out of touch with this generation and a little rusty when it comes to writing. He’s giving it his best shot but it’s really not good enough so save yourself a few bucks and just pre-order the next issue of Action Comics and cross your fingers that the next creative team will be able to write a good Superman story.
